For the Guys…
Market data show that men are a fast-growing segment of the cosmetic surgery population and have a particular interest in minimally invasive procedures. The male patients we see here at Modern Dermatology mirror that trend, and so in honor of Father’s Day we’ve rounded up some of the most popular treatments for our male patients.
Emsculpt
Emsculpt uses non-invasive HIFEM® (High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic) technology induces powerful muscle contractions not achievable through voluntary contractions, these are called supramaximal contractions. These contractions activate deep remodeling of the muscle’s inner structure resulting in an average increase of 16% in muscle mass.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared Emsculpt for the improvement of abdominal tone, strengthening of the abdominal muscles, development of firmer abdomen, and strengthening, toning, firming of the buttocks. While patients may see the added benefit of fat reduction with Emsculpt, that is not the primary goal of this treatment, so if fat reduction is part of your goal your doctor may suggest pairing Emsculpt with a fat reduction treatment like CoolSculpting or SculpSure.
Each treatment is 30 minutes with a minimum of (4) sessions scheduled 2-3 days apart then maintenance treatments every 3-4 months. Your treatment plan will be customized to your goals after your consultation with Dr. Mraz or Dr. Klein. Emsculpt is non-invasive and there is no pre-treatment preparation and no recovery time.
SculpSure/Coolsculpting
Freeze Fat: CoolSculpting is an innovative way to contour your body by freezing unwanted fat away with no surgery or downtime. The FDA-cleared non-surgical fat reduction treatment uses controlled cooling to eliminate stubborn areas of fat. Treated fat cells are frozen and then die. Over time, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cell. Results are permanent as the fat cells are gone. The number of treatments needed varies by patient – some see results in as little as one office visit where others require more. There is no downtime following treatment and little to no discomfort aside from temporary feeling of cold and some mild pulling sensation from the suction. There are 9 FDA approved areas including the abdomen, flanks, chin, arms, inner and outer thighs, back, bra and banana roll. Results are seen 2-3 months after the procedure.
Melt Fat: The world’s first FDA-cleared laser treatment for non-invasive fat reduction of the abdomen, flanks, back, inner thighs, outer thighs and is now available for the submental (under the chin) area. It’s designed to safely and effectively eliminate unwanted fat cells. Like CoolSculpting, the results are permanent and there is no downtime following treatment. Most patients require a series of two treatments separated by 6-8 weeks. During the treatment, you experience the sensation of mild to moderate heat. There is no downtime following the treatments and results are seen 2-3 months after the procedure.
Bro-tox
Well, it’s really just Botox, but for the bro’s we use this affectionate term. Botulinum toxin type A is an injectable neurotoxin, most commonly known by brand names such as Botox Cosmetic®, Dysport®, Xeomin® and Jeuveau™. Neurotoxins are often used to treat wrinkles that form as a result of our most frequent facial movements like smiling, frowning and squinting. The treatment works by blocking nerve impulses to the muscles that create these movements, causing them to relax which will soften your expressions and reduce your wrinkles. We treat all the same areas in men as we do women, but the most common are the glabellar lines (aka the “elevens” or frown lines), crow’s feet and forehead. For the guys who are staring down at their phones all day on that long commute the jawline and neck can be treated to prevent “tech neck.”
We also use neurotoxins to treat hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating. We treat many mens’ palms, feet, underarms and even heads. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved injectable neurotoxin treatment for the underarms; however, several studies have shown efficacy when used elsewhere on the body, including the palms, soles, and scalp, for hyperhidrosis. Botulinum toxin injections temporary block a chemical in the body that stimulates the sweat glands. Most patients notice results 4 to 5 days after receiving treatment and results last for approximately 3 to 6 months.
Hair Restoration
There are more options now than ever. Depending on the patient’s situation we often times start a treatment plan out with topicals, shampoos and oral medications – however our leading in-office therapies really take those results to the next level.
Platelet Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM): PRFM is an emerging treatment that can help regrow lost hair, with little pain and virtually no side effects. Platelets are the cells in the blood that help tissue to heal and grow new cells – they help promote hair growth by prolonging the growing phase of the hair cycle.
The process begins with a small blood draw (usually from the arm). The blood is then placed in a sterile tube that is spun down in a centrifuge to separate the different components of the blood. Red and white blood cells are divided from the platelets and the plasma (the clear fluid). This plasma now contains a higher than normal number of platelets and is called platelet rich plasma, or PRP. PRP is then converted to PRFM creating a scaffold to protect and persevere the platelets so their release of growth factors can be sustained over a longer period of time when they delivered back into the scalp. Typically, patients will need monthly injections for 3 consecutive months, and then maintenance treatments every 6-12 months. The injection schedule will depend on your genetics, pattern and amount of hair loss, age and hormones.
