Gone for Good

Gone for Good

By: Dr. Deanne Mraz, MD, FAAD

If your plans for 2019 include looking and feeling your best, SculpSure might be a great addition to your approach. The FDA approved permanent fat-loss treatment uses advanced laser technology to safely reduce stubborn fat without surgery or downtime.

SculpSure uses Hyperthermic laser technology (heat) to melt away stubborn fat to achieve a more sculpted physique. The treatment is most effective in healthy men and women who struggle with stubborn bulges of fat despite diet and exercise – the most common offenders being:

  • The abdomen (belly fat)

  • The flanks (love handles)

  • Back fat

  • Inner and outer thigh fat

  • Double chin

We asked Dr. Mraz to answer some common questions about the treatment. Dr. Mraz is a fellowship-trained cosmetic dermatologist with extensive expertise and experience in body contouring. Dr. Mraz’s expertise on the topic is spotlighted at speaking engagements around the world for companies including Cynosure (the parent company of SculpSure), Merz (parent company of Cellfina), and Allergan (parent company of CoolSculpting) as well as at industry conferences including the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), VCS (Vegas Cosmetic Surgery Symposium) and 5CC.

How does SculpSure work?

SculpSure uses heat that safely passes through the skin to penetrate fat cells. The temperature ranges from 107.6 to 116.6 F which is hot enough to kill fat cells underneath the skin, while leaving other tissues unharmed. The fat cells absorb the thermal energy, which damages and then kills fat cells. Over the span of several weeks, the lymphatic system filters the damaged fat cells and processes them out of the body naturally (read: in our urine/bowel movements). The fat cells are permanently gone, leading to long-term reduction in visible fat. Even if you gain weight, only the cells that are left are affected.

How is SculpSure different from CoolSculpting?

SculpSure heats fat to destroy it vs. CoolSculpting, which freezes it. Furthermore, SculpSure treats multiple areas in one session, and is ideal for “debulking” larger problem areas on the body. At Modern Dermatology Dr. Klein and I are pleased to offer both fat reduction treatments to our patients. After a consult we can determine which (or sometimes a combination of the two) treatment is right for each patient.

How long does it take?

Treatments take as little as 25 minutes, are painless, and require no downtime – you can return to your normal activities immediately after the session. Many patients see results as early as six weeks following treatment, as the body begins to eliminate the destroyed fat cells; optimal results are usually seen at 12 weeks. Every patient is different, however most people see the best results when they receive a series of treatments.

Will I lose weight?

SculpSure is not a weight-loss treatment, it is a body contouring treatment. When we lose weight, the size of our fat cells become smaller, but they do not decrease in number. SculpSure destroys fat cells and eliminates them vs. shrinking them. It’s intended for men and women who are at a healthy weight (ideal BMI of 30 or under) and are living a healthy lifestyle.
